8,000 books sold at GCU fair

The three-day book fair, organised by the Government College University (GCU) Library Society, concluded on the varsity campus on Friday. According to a Library Society’s survey, students purchased over 8,000 books out of their meager pocket money from the book fair which displayed more than 80,000 books on various subjects. Addressing the closing ceremony, noted journalist and Old Ravian Khalid Ahmed said that reading and writing was a Muslim tradition. (more…)

HEC ranked GCU best university 2010

The Government College University (GCU) had set new record by winning 115 oratory awards besides achieving numerous academic and extra-mural distinctions.

In 2010, the Higher Education Commission ranked GCU as the best university of Lahore and second best in Punjab for producing 282 research papers in top journals in a year.

In the eighth year of its inception as university, GCU outshined some of the finest and oldest universities of Lahore in research including as the University of Punjab which was placed one step beneath GCU with 269 publications, while the University of Veterinary and Health Sciences, Lahore (UVAS) was ranked 12th with 101 research publications. GCU shines at CM’s speech contest

Debating Society of Government College University (GCU) has set an unprecedented record of wining overall 17 positions at the Chief Minister Punjab Speech Contest 2010. The final rounds, held on Tuesday at the Govt Science College, Wahdat Road and Government Postgraduate College for Women, Wahdat Road, GCU speakers won three distinctions.

In the Postgraduate English category, Muhammad Umer Jee Saleemi stood first and Ali Zafar secured the second position among the winners of the Division level, who represented the best universities of Punjab.

In the Intermediate English category, Ahmed Chaudhry was declared the best speaker at the district, division and province levels.

Earlier, in the district and division level rounds, GCU bagged a total of 14 positions in various categories. Overall, GCU speakers won 17 positions and a total of Rs 0.5 million cash prize this year. (more…)

GCU convocation | UHS results

Nuclear scientist Dr Samar Mubarakmand has said copper and gold reservoirs are also located in North Waziristan. He revealed this while delivering his keynote address at the ninth convocation of the Government College University (GCU) here on Friday.

Dr Mubarakmand, who has recently been elected unopposed as president of the Old Ravians Union, said Pakistan was one of the richest countries in the world in terms of mineral reserves and there was a need for proper exploration of these reserves.

“If we take steps in the right way, Pakistan will become a developed rich state in next two decades,” he said. (more…)
