Punjab colleges struggles to sell four-year BS degree

The number of bachelors’ students in the ‘top 26′ Punjab colleges has dropped almost by half in the wake of the Shahbaz Sharif government’s flagship initiative: the launching of four-year BS (Honours) programme.

The Punjab higher education department says some 12,400 students have got admission in the new programme offering 25 disciplines — against last year’s enrolment of over 23,500.

The programme was launched on Oct 15. These top 26 colleges in 12 districts have ceased to offer the old two-year degree programme. These were considered to be more resourceful of the 440 government colleges in the province.

The students who have enrolled in the new programme are uncertain as they await qualified teachers to turn up in full strength, and for infrastructural facilities to take shape.Many in the select group of colleges lack even the information technology (IT) labs which are an important component of the programme. An IT teacher from one of the selected institutions in Gujranwala says his college has not even been provided a course outline. READ MORE »

67 colleges, high schools get notices for poor results

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has issued show-cause notices to 67 city-based colleges and higher secondary schools for their poor performance in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) humanities group annual examination-2010.
Quoting the relevant rules authorising the board to suspend or cancel its affiliation with any college or higher secondary school whose students’ pass percentage registers below 33, BIEK chairman Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai said that the 67 educational institutions served show-cause notices had been asked to explain their position within the next 15 days. He said the notices had been issued a few days back and a final decision on their affiliation with the board would be taken in the light of their explanation. READ MORE »

17 schools, colleges may lose board affiliation

The affiliation of 17 arts higher secondary schools and colleges with the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi is at the risk of cancellation after the recently announced results of higher secondary school certificate (humanities) annual examinations-2010 showed abysmal performance of their students, it emerged on Thursday.

The pass percentage of eight private and five government colleges and one private and three government higher secondary schools in the humanities exams remained zero. READ MORE »

Wapda Cadet College, Tarbela has admission open to 8th class for the session 2011.

Eligibility for admission is age between 12 and 14 years on April 1, 2011 and should have passed 7th class up to March 2011 or studying in 8th Class.

Examination, Interview and Medical Test

Written examination at WAPDA Cadet College Tarbela, Lahore and Multan in English, Urdu, and Mathematics will be held on January 9, 2011. FG Postgraduate commerce college classroom brawl

A brawl between two students over a seat in the classroom of a city college ended in an armed clash on Thursday in which one student was killed and another seriously wounded, police said.

Inam Abbasi, 22, died of a bullet that pierced through his chest while his friend Adeel Azkar, also 22, was lying in intensive care unit with a bullet lodged in his neck.

Police have registered a murder case against Mohammad Wasif, who had fought with Azkar over the classroom seat three days ago, and his friends. They had fled the scene after the shooting.

All three were students of the Federal Government Postgraduate Commerce College in Sector H-8/4. Students who saw the two stick-wielding rival groups clash a little distance from the college ran for safety when shots rang out at the scene. READ MORE »
