Public, private campuses: House wants concerts banned

The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution seeking a ban on ‘objectionable’ concerts in all public and private educational institutions in the province.

The resolution was moved by PML-Q’s Seemal Kamran who wanted a ban on all concerts by the educational institutions, terming them unethical.

Rana Sanaullah Khan said the resolution had been moved in reaction to a recent concert by a private institution at the Alhamra Cultural Complex where three girl students died in a stampede. He said all concerts were not unethical and he had no objection to the resolution if it contained the word “unethical concerts.”

He said the news of the event was marginalized because the institution belonged to the owners of a media house. The media would have made it an issue had there been a government institution involved, he said. (more…)

Colleges chain, ‘booti mafia’ managed protests, panel told

LAIIORE, Nov 15: Gujranwala Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Chairman Mehar Bashir Ahmad informed a judicial commission that the Punjab Group of Colleges and ‘Booti mafia’ had managed the protests against messed-up intermediate results during which building and furniture of the board was ransacked and burnt.
However, this information did not astonish the commission comprising Justice Chaudhry Shahid Saeed and he went on to say, “I know the influence and penetration of this group in obtaining good results for its students. During my university days, this group used to influence the examination department to secure better res tilts.” (more…)

Advance fee issue troubles MAO College students

A large number of students of the Government MAO College are in a fix as the administration has withheld their roll number slips for upcoming MA Part-I exam, pressurising them to first submit dues for yet-to-start Part-II classes.

The students condemning the decision have demanded the authorities of Higher Education Department, Punjab, intervene and provide relief to them. The students said there was no logic in collecting dues of the classes which were yet to commence, adding that the issue was badly affecting their preparations for the exams scheduled to commence from June 9, 2011. Schools summer holidays confusion in Sindh

May 12: Senior Minister for Education Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, allowing schools being run under the Cambridge system of education to continue with their previous schedule of the summer vacation, informed their representatives on Wednesday that Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah would take a final decision in this regard.

According to a recent decision of the provincial education department’s steering committee, all public and private schools in the province will observe the summer vacation in July and August to avoid loss of studies due to reduced timings of the institutions in Ramazan. (more…)

FC College students protest

A large number of FC College, Lahore students on Monday staged a protest demonstration against the varsity administration for barring them from appearing in the intermediate annual examination 2011 as regular students.

They organized the demonstration outside the varsity campus near the Canal Road to protest the university decision, saying the administration had withheld their admissions on the basis of short attendance, terming it great injustice. They claimed the number of students whose admissions had been withheld was over 300. Each year the issue surfaces when colleges withhold admission of students in the wake of short attendance in lectures (below 75 percent), a requirement imposed by the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore. SSC exams from April 5

The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination under Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) will start on April 5.
The roll number slips have already been dispatched to the institutions for the regular candidates and to the private candidates at the addresses mentioned in admission forms. (more…)
