10th Convocation at Fatima Jinnah Women University

Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) will commemorate the academic achievements of its students on the 10th Convocation to be held on November 30 (Thursday) at the Convention Center. Punjab Governor Salman Taseer will award the degrees to the graduating students. A “Meet the Press” session chaired by the Vice Chancellor, FJWU will be held on the Rehearsal Day of Convocation at 11:00am in the Syndicate Room here at the university premises. (more…)

Book Foundation in doldrums

The National Book Foundation (NBF) is in grip of internal turmoil with its two top bosses hurling serious embezzlement and administrative charges on one another, ultimately putting the foundation in jeopardy.

The NBF Secretary Ms Irshad Abbasi, under suspension, served a 22-point charge sheet on the NBF Managing Director (MD) Mazharul Islam. However, he refutes it in toto and describes the onslaught a “blackmailing tactic” she is using against him like his predecessors.

The Education Secretary suspended Ms Abbasi and ordered a ministerial inquiry into the Foundation affairs within four week, particularly on the lady’s proceeding abroad without approval finally rejected by the prime minister himself.

The NBF secretary, however, claims that the MD sacked her on writing the 22-point letter, charge sheet, pinpointing multi-million embezzlements and expected audit objections. “I have all-out proofs, NoCs etc to be presented in the court of law,” she says.  (more…)

Rawalpindi SSC exams from March 5,2011

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Rawalpindi, on Friday announced the annual examination for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) would start from March 5 next year.

It asked candidates to submit fees before January 21. Both regular and private candidates have been informed to submit examination fee of Rs580 and Rs600 respectively. Private students appearing for the first time in the examination will submit additional Rs700 in registration fee. Dawn

US helping Pakistan to improve education, says Munter

The United States will work with the Pakistan’s government to renovate more than 2,000 schools and build 150 new ones over the next two years as part of its efforts to improve education in Pakistan, US ambassador Cameron Munter has said.

Responding to an article in a leading American newspaper implying that US had failed to contribute to strengthening education in Pakistan, the envoy said that since 2002, Washington has provided nearly $640 million for the betterment of education, benefiting more than 900,000 students.

In his regular column in The New York Times on his recent visit to Pakistan, correspondent Nicholas Kristoff said that the US had allocated large amount of military aid to Pakistan but not for educational institutions. (more…)

Talented students to be welcomed in UK: envoy

FAISALABAD: Students can play a key role in improving the image of the country in the UK and other European countries, said British Deputy High Commissioner and Director Trade and Investment in Pakistan Robert W Gibson here on Wednesday. Addressing students and faculty members of a local university, he assured that talented students would be welcomed in the UK. He inaugurated the new telecommunication laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering in the university. Teachers demand steps for recovery of VC

Teachers Wednesday continued protest against the government for its failure to recover Ajmal Khan, vice-chancellor of the Islamia College University, and demanded swift efforts to save his life.
The Federation of the All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, staged demonstration outside the Peshawar Press Club. The teaching community, under the banner of FAPUASA, had suspended academic activities by boycotting classes from Monday in all the public sector universities of the province.
Following in the footsteps of FAPUASA, the vice-chancellors of all public sector universities in the province decided to shut down all the universities and its constituent institutions till recovery of the educationist and his driver Mohibullah. (more…)
