Punjab appoints Alqama BZU VC

The Punjab government has appointed Dr Syed Aiqama as vice chancellor of the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU). A notification in this regard was issued on Saturday by Higher Education Secretary Haseeb Athar. According to the notification, Dr Aiqama has been appoint ed vice chancellor for a term of four years.
The chief minister had sent the summary for appointment of Dr Aiqama as vice chancellor on June 25. Instead of acting on chief minister’s advice, the chancellor/governor purported to appoint Prof Dr Muhammad Zafarullah as vice chancellor and a row ensued.
Dr Aiqama, a professor of international relations at the Bahauddin Zakariya University, is currently serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to Yemen. (more…)

Agri varsity to set up dengue research centre

FAISALABAD, Oct 8: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) will set up a research centre on dengue virus and a feasibility report will be finalized by a panel of scientists from various faculties of the university.This was decided in a meeting between Chief Minister’s
Dengue Research and Development (R&D) Programme head Dr Waseem Akram and university Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar
Ahmad here on Saturday.
The research centre will cover all aspects of dengue, including prevention, immunisation, vaccine, biodiversity, impact of climate changes, entomological practices, biological control and botanical and social factors.
The vice chancellor said the university would conduct a series of lectures on dengue on every Saturday from l0 am to 11am that would be open to all public and civil society. (more…)

IJT men threaten PU officials

LAHORE, Oct 8: Islami Jamiat Tulaba activists on Saturday threatened officials of the Punjab University administration of dire consequences during a meeting at the PU Emergency Center which was in progress to discuss security issues.
Senior administrative officials and faculty members were present in the meeting.
According to a news release issued by a PU spokesman, IJT hooligans Atif Guj jar, Hans and Tayyab along with some 35 accomplices managed to enter the meeting room and started threatening varsity officials.
He alleged that IJT activists threatened to kill all security guards of the university.
He said the IJT activists, who were standing outside the Emergency Center, were carrying weapons, rods and batons. (more…)

Shangla schools still in ruins

SHANGLA, Oct 8: Six years after the devastating earthquake flattened most of the infrastructure facilities in Shangla district on Oct 8, 2005 only 30 of the 202 destroyed school buildings here could be rebuilt so far while around 15,000 students are still without educational facilities.
When contacted, Executive District Officer (education) Abdullah told Dawn that the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) had miserably failed to reconstruct the destroyed schools in Shangla district.
He said that 185 schools were damaged extensively and 17 others partiality in the quake tragedy. He said that the Erra had so far handed over 30 schools to the education department after their construct ion. He said work on 82 schools was yet to be started while projects for 18 schools buildings were in the tendering stage. (more…)
