British Council trains 700 researchers

A total of 700 young researchers across Pakistan were trained in a year under British Council’s International Strategic Partnership in Research and Education (INSPIRE) programme.
This was stated at concluding session of two-day workshops on research essentials for young Pakistani researchers in Pakistan.
The Programme gave researchers from Pakistan a chance to visit UK universities to gain exposure and knowledge. Syeda Faiza Jamil from Textile Institute of Pakistan (TIP) and Dr. Zaheer-ul-Haque Qasmi from Karachi University (KU) participated in INSPIRE-TRXP, and are now working as Master Trainers with the British Council and the Department of Learning and Innovation Department in the Higher Education Commission Pakistan to further cascade what they learned during their visit and the workshop to other researchers in Karachi. 8,000 books sold at GCU fair

The three-day book fair, organised by the Government College University (GCU) Library Society, concluded on the varsity campus on Friday. According to a Library Society’s survey, students purchased over 8,000 books out of their meager pocket money from the book fair which displayed more than 80,000 books on various subjects. Addressing the closing ceremony, noted journalist and Old Ravian Khalid Ahmed said that reading and writing was a Muslim tradition. (more…)

203 lecturers get appointment letters in Sindh

The Senior Minister for Education and Literacy, Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq issued 203 appointment letters to lecturers selected by the Public Service Commission (PSC) on Friday. A distribution ceremony was organised at the Reform Support Unit (RSU) in the NJV Government Higher Secondary School on MA Jinnah Road.

The freshly appointed lecturers would perform their duties at different colleges of the province. At least 80 female and 122 male lecturers were selected for vacant posts in the education department of Sindh, with 77 of them joining colleges in Karachi.

Interestingly, one of the lecturers was issued appointment letters for two different posts. He then had to choose which post he would be willing to accept. However, some of the lecturers protested against being posted in far flung areas. (more…)

Govt asked to revive Fata community schools

Various political parties and notables from the tribal belt have announced full support to teachers of the community schools and promised to strive at every forum for revival of these institutions in the tribal areas.

The assurance was extended at a press conference of the sacked teachers of the Fata community schools. Apart from a large number of schoolteachers, the press conference was attended by MNA Mohammad Shah Afridi, MNA Malik Waris Khan Afridi, leader of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Iqbal Afridi, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Said Khan Mohmand, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s Said Kabeer, All Teachers Association Fata Vice President Nawab Afridi, General Secretary Haji Mushtaq and others. COMSAT raises fees

Students have appealed from Chief Justice to take notice of the revised fee structure of COMSAT Institute of Information Technology.

Parents of the students have urged Ministry of Science and Technology and Chief Justice of Pakistan to probe into the rising fees of the university. University has raised the fees to the highest level, especially in Wah and Lahore campuses. They have increased 5 to 7 thousand per student per semester. (more…)

HEC ranked GCU best university 2010

The Government College University (GCU) had set new record by winning 115 oratory awards besides achieving numerous academic and extra-mural distinctions.

In 2010, the Higher Education Commission ranked GCU as the best university of Lahore and second best in Punjab for producing 282 research papers in top journals in a year.

In the eighth year of its inception as university, GCU outshined some of the finest and oldest universities of Lahore in research including as the University of Punjab which was placed one step beneath GCU with 269 publications, while the University of Veterinary and Health Sciences, Lahore (UVAS) was ranked 12th with 101 research publications.
