2011 is the International Year of Chemistry

The world will celebrate 2011 as the year of chemistry. The theme of the year is “Chemistry our life, our future.”

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and United Nation’s Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) both endorsed the year as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC).

UNESCO and IUPAC both strongly believe that it is time to celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the world of science and technology.

It was in August 2007 that the IUPAC General Assembly in Italy decided to dedicate 2011 to the advancement of chemistry. (more…)

US high-school student kills principal

OMAHA (USA): The son of a police detective opened fire at a high school in the state of Nebraska on Wednesday, fatally wounding the assistant principal and forcing panicked students to take cover in the kitchen of the building just as they returned from holiday break.

The gunman, who had attended the school for no more than two months, also wounded the principal before fleeing from the scene and fatally shooting himself in his car.

Authorities declined to speculate about why the suspect, identified as 17-year-old Robert Butler Jr., targeted the administrators.

Vice Principal Vicki Kaspar, 58, died at a hospital hours after the shooting, police said. Principal Curtis Case, 45, was listed in stable condition. (more…)

Education govt’s top priority

Member National Assembly Saira Afzal Tarar has said the education is first priority of Punjab govt and they are working their best for it.
She was addressing a prize-distribution ceremony of Chief Minister’s competititon’s for Urdu and English debates and essay writing held at College of Home Economics, Gulberg, here on Saturday.
She said Punjab education department had the second largest employment after armed forces in the country and they had to spend huge budget for it. (more…)

PEF to educate 16,000 students in third phase

Punjab Education Foundation has launched third phase of New School Program (NSP) in 12 different districts in which 16,000 deserving students will get free education through 80 partner schools.
PEF Project Officer NSP Hassan Javed while addressing the participants of an agreement signing ceremony held at Punjab Institute of Language, Art & Culture (PILAC) Auditorium on Saturday told that under the third phase, five schools have been selected in each of the districts of Khushab, Lodhran, Layyah, Mianwali and Narowal, seven each in Rahim Yar Khan and Toba Tek Singh, eight from Vehari, ten from Khanewal and Bhakkar, four from Attock and nine from Sargodha. He said a sum of Rs 5.6 million would be spent on the education of NSP students every month. (more…)
