Education emergency No action, just talk

Pakistan is crippled by an education emergency threatening tens of thousands of children, said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) legislator Shahnaz Wazir Ali on Wednesday.

The co-chair of Pakistan Education Task Force was briefing government officials, civil society organisations and media at the launch of March for Education, a campaign running throughout the month to raise awareness of the country’s education emergency.

The launch was accompanied by the release of a booklet, Education Emergency Pakistan, sketching a grim picture of the state of education. (more…)

Student in police lock-up for teacher’s sake

A student’s plan to teach a man a lesson for allegedly harassing his female teacher landed him in the lock-up on Tuesday, police said.

With a shawl over him, the police spotted the student roaming in street 20 of sector F-11/2, which housed an office of Tajikistan embassy, with a wheel-spanner in his hand. During search, police also recovered a loaded 30-bore pistol from him. He was taken into custody and shifted to Shalimar police station. (more…)

Teachers to rally against extra duties

Teachers have criticised the Punjab school education department for assigning them various additional duties without resolving their problems including a raise in salaries.

Schoolteachers under the banner of Punjab Teachers Union and Joint Action Committee have announced a demonstration and a hunger strike camp in front of Punjab Assembly on Thursday (today).

In a statement issued here on Wednesday,PTU and JAC leaders Rana Muhammad Arshad, Rana Liaquat Ali, Syed Sajjad Akbar Kazmi and others stated that teachers were being deputed to administer anti-polio vaccination drops to children, census duty, bringing out-of-school children to schools and examination task. Medical college sought for endemic diseases

A seminar on ‘tropical and endemic diseases’ organised by the Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) and the Pakistan Army discussed on Friday the outbreak of infectious diseases in the area, says a press release.

IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Mukhtar underlined the need to establish a medical college for the treatment of infectious diseases gripping the region.

He said such a college was only possible with the financial support of federal and provincial governments. (more…)
