Maori Health Research 2010, New Zealand 21.Aug
Summer Studentships in Maori health research are available to introduce research to those students who have the potential to develop careers involving Maori health research. Applications are now sought from students undertaking health related courses wishing to be involved in a Maori healthresearch project over the summer vacation.
Selection will be based on the potential of the student to have a career with a significant involvement in Maori health research and the quality of their intended supervision. Supervisors should be a suitable role model, with a clearly demonstrated record of publication in health research and the necessary time, interest and enthusiasm to give to the student (maximum 2 students per supervisor). The project should be a distinct piece of research that is achievable within the period of the studentship (usually ten weeks). Some training in research methodology and report writing should be involved and the student is encouraged to present the results of the research at a seminar and/or by publication. It is the student’s and the supervisor’s joint responsibility to ensure that the project is completed on time.
If ethics approval is required for the summer studentship, it is the supervisor’s responsibility to ensure that this is obtained at the time an application is submitted for consideration. Otherwise, students are advised to select a project that does not require ethics approval.
Research projects should be related directly to the health of iwi/Maori with the precise topic to be determined by the applicant and their supervisor.
Application is by letter, which should include;
• Applicant’s name, iwi and hapu affiliation, department, institution, course;
• Applicant’s address, email address, phone number and day time contact number;
• A statement from the student indicating their commitment to iwi Maori;
• Previous experience of working in Maori health or the Maori community;
• Title of the proposed research;
• A statement from the student that they are available full time for at least 10 weeks of the summer vacation;
• An outline (not more than two pages) of the proposed research and its expected completion time;
• A statement (not more than half a page) from the student indicating their reasons for wishing to undertake the research studentship;
• A copy of the student’s academic record;
• Name, position, department, contact details and summary of the qualifications and publication record of the supervisor(s);
• A statement from the supervisor (not more than half a page) indicating any special qualities of the
student or research project, and the ways in which the student will benefit from the studentship.
Within four weeks of completion of the studentship, a report is required from the student, in
collaboration with their supervisor, outlining the work carried out by them while funded by the HRC summer studentship as well as any outcomes resulting from their research (such as publications);
• The application must be signed by the supervisor to confirm that he/she has read and supports the application.
Application Deadline 25 August 2010
