Adamjee College bags top positions in inter exams

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) declared on Monday the results of the Higher Secondary School Certificate, part-II (Pre-Engineering and Science General – Computer Science) annual examinations-2011.

The overall pass percentage in the Pre-Engineering and Computer Science groups stood at 52pc (boys’ 51.42pc and girls’ 53.61pc) and 34.06pc (boys’ 32.14pc and girls’ 36.20pc), respectively.

It was after a gap of two years that all the top three positions in the Pre-Engineering group went to boys as earlier they had this honour in 2008 while shared the positions with girls in 2009 and 2010 examinations of the same group.

The girls, however, outclassed boys in the Computer Science group by clinching all the top three positions. READ MORE »

HEC again likely to face worst financial crisis

The meeting of vice chancellors (VCs) on Tuesday at Higher Education Commission (HEC) Headquarters was a battlefield as all head of universities came hard on HEC management for allocation of funds and other affairs. On the other hand HEC Chairman Dr Javaid Laghari shrugged his shoulders by saying that HEC did not have more funds to allocate to universities.

According to sources, the HEC is likely to face the worst financial crisis again as Planning Commission (PC) has released only 14 percent of the total development budget during the first quarter of this fiscal year. Besides cutting down the budget allocations of varsities to 10 to 15%, bearing the brunt of these moves, their management is facing severe financial problems.

Lahore schools, colleges shut over dengue fears

The Punjab government has decided to shut down all public and private sector schools and colleges in Lahore for 10 days to protect students from the dengue virus and to complete spraying and other arrangements. This was announced after as many as 559 new cases of dengue fever were reported during the last 24 hours across the Punjab province. This number includes an MPA and his wife and daughter.

The decision to close down all educational institutions was announced by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif while presiding over a meeting to review measures against the dengue virus here on Tuesday. He said educational institutions would carryout spraying and necessary measures during the holidays while monitoring teams will supervise the process.

He also issued instructions for the immediate suspension of the Medical Superintendent Benazir Hospital, Rawalpindi, saying that doctors and paramedics serving the ailing people would be commended while those showing negligence would not be spared. READ MORE »

Women university to get 50 scholarships

The acting governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karamatullah Khan Chagharmatti, has said that naming the first women university of the province after former prime minister Benazir Bhutto is a great tribute to the leader, who sacrificed her life for the country.

Addressing as chief guest the inaugural ceremony of the new campus of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed First Women University at Landai Sarak here on Thursday, he said that no stone would be left unturned to fulfil all requirements of the university including provision security, transport and scholarships.

He also assured the administration of the university of provision of 50 scholarships immediately, said a handout.

The ceremony was also addressed by Provincial Minister for Health Syed Zahir Ali Shah, MPA Malik Tehmash Khan and Vice-Chancellor Dr Farhana Jehangir. READ MORE »

The Bahria University, Islamabad, has been honoured with the ‘Best Library Award’ by the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR), says a press release issued here on Friday.

The university library has been selected for the said award after having passed through a fiercely competitive peer-review process, based on present capacity, commitment to research, and study in science and religion. The BU Islamabad now stands amongst the top 150 institutions worldwide to have attained such an exalted position.

The university library is already considered one of the best fully automated libraries of the country, and the first in Pakistan to have developed Institutional repository online using DSpace software, while its librarian Hafiz Aamir Rasul is the only Ambassador for DSpace software nationwide.
