The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has issued show-cause notices to 67 city-based colleges and higher secondary schools for their poor performance in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) humanities group annual examination-2010.
Quoting the relevant rules authorising the board to suspend or cancel its affiliation with any college or higher secondary school whose students’ pass percentage registers below 33, BIEK chairman Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai said that the 67 educational institutions served show-cause notices had been asked to explain their position within the next 15 days. He said the notices had been issued a few days back and a final decision on their affiliation with the board would be taken in the light of their explanation.
Among these institutions are 13 colleges and four higher secondary schools whose students’ pass percentage in the exam appeared to be zero. Nine of them are private and the rest public sector institutions.
Expressing his concern over the deteriorating standard of education at both public and private educational institutions, Prof Zai said that it had now become necessary for the board to advise parents that they must inquire about the performance of institutions in the previous (intermediate) examinations before getting their wards admitted to the higher classes. Members of the centralised admission policy (CAP) committee also should not place students in those institutions whose performance remained abysmal, he suggested.
The institutions which came out with zero pass percentage in the HSC (humanities) annual examination-2010 are: Ghazi Mohammad Bin Qasim Govt Higher Secondary School; Govt Girls Higher Secondary School (SM), Chaneser Goth; Iqra Grammar High Secondary School, Ahmed Raza Road; Al-Razi College of Intermediate Education; Rehan Intermediate College, Korangi No.4; Tariq Bin Ziad College, Shah Faisal Colony; Govt Boys Comprehensive Higher Secondary School, Azizabad; Modern College, Gulshan-i-Hadeed; Govt Degree Boys College, Shams Pir, Baba Bhit; Govt Degree College, Jungle Shah, Keamari; Quaid-i-Millat College (evening); Ghazi Foundation College, Gulshan-i-Iqbal; Al-Noor Degree College, Block 18, Federal B Area; Gulshan College of Information Technology and Management Sciences; Govt Degree Arts and Commerce College, Razzaqabad; VMT College for Girls; and Haji Abdullah Haroon Govt College (evening).
